Le Carnaval des animaux

The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) is a fun series of 14 pieces written by the French composer Camille Saint Saens.  Why not listen to the pieces in the correct sequence and make notes about each one’s features e.g. tempo, pitch, dynamics etc.

Now listen to them again out of sequence.  Can you identify each piece and the animal it is portraying?

A list of the animals is provided here – The Carnival of the Animals

A quick google search will provide you with each of the tracks listed or you can find out about an associated App here:  .

Peter and the Wolf

This video is most suitable for very brave children in years 4, 5 and 6.

The musical tale for children tells the story of a young boy called Peter who lives with his grandfather. Grandfather does not want Peter to go out of their garden because there are wolves around. One day Peter goes out the garden gate and the story takes a worrying turn for the worst. This is not one for the faint of heart.  With music written by Sergei Prokofiev this story will have you on the edge of your seat and occasionally hiding behind it

Why not research the composer more and find out about the instruments that represent each of the characters in the story.

SUPER SYNTHS

Why not use the keys on your computer keyboard to control a retro sounding synth.  It will be like stepping back in time to the 1980’s.  Look at all those buttons and switches.  I wonder what they do?

Once you have had a play around with the sounds why don’t you try to make up a piece of music and write it down on paper.  How will you write it down?  Will you use treble clef notes or will you invent you own way of writing music down?

Year 1

Why not have a go on this music making game.  Click on the empty squares to make a short tune.  Low boxes will make low pitched sounds and higher boxes play high pitched sounds.  Challenge: can you sing the tune that you have made?

Remember that there is an easy, medium and hard level for this game.
